Does Your Pet Hate Your Vacuum?

Since North freaks out at about everything from the doorbell to when the mop comes out of the closet, I'm not surprised by this video featured on the Wall Street Journal Online about how dogs react to the vacuum. I can see how an unmanned moving object that makes strange noises like the Roomba could be scary (or lunch) to a confused pooch.

Although you gave some great advice about how to clear up the brutal battle between your pets and the vacuum, it seems that pets and technology just don't always mix! Does your pet hate your vacuum?

I need to vote 2x I've got one that attacks and one that ignores. Now the funny part about it is that theyy reverse roles for this. My generally dominate and protective dog ignores the vaccuum but my happy go lucky loves everyone dog HATES the vacuum. Go figure!

My dog is not a fan of the vacuum, but she will just move into another room. However, my late ferret used to attack the vacuum - it was so funny!

My dog is like rickimc's dog - she doesn't try to attack the vacuum, but she immediately runs into another room or a place she feels safe. I think it might be the noise that bothers her?

My kitty is more scared and curious of it. When it's turned off she tries to smell it and creep up close, but when it's on she gets scared fo the noise and runs away!

My kitties always run for cover when the vacuum appears. One goes behind the couch, the others run to a quiet room.

He used to freak out, but I started putting treats on the vacuum cleaner and now he's more calm when I bring it out and waits for me to give him treats. He doesn't bark at it anymore, which is great.

Kassie will move to another room while the vacuum is going. Jeffrey will actually growl and charge at it. I have put him on a leash and walked him with me as a I vacuumed which has helped a bit but I only did it because he is not completely terrified of it

my dog does an attack and retreat: he charges it growling and barking, and then he's fine once he let's it know who's boss.

of course my co-workers find this hilarious (my dog comes to work with me) so they LOVE any opportunity they get to bring out the vacuum here and watch him go nuts.

my dog used to go nuts and i used to let him - i thought it was funny. but, someone told me it was ridiculous and i started to see their point. i worked on correcting his behavior and now he lays on the couch like a good boy while i vacuum. while it was entertaining to watch him go nuts, it really wasn't helping him at all - only getting him more ampted up and upset. and, there's no need for that.

Our last dog used to lose his head when the vacuum came out but Bella doesn't really seem to mind it at all- we do have a vacuum cleaner designed for people with pets which seems to be quieter than regular ones though.

My cat runs and hides as soon as she sees me plugging the vacuum in.

When I was a kid, we had a Bernese Mountain Dog mix and he LOVED the vacuum. When you got it out he would lay down in your way, and wouldn't get up until you used the upholstery attachment to vacuum him! It was really funny. It must have felt like a massage to him or something. At least it kept him clean in between baths, and made brushing really easy since it sucked all the dead hair off!
