T'giving Tip: A Taste Is All It Takes

Introducing large quantities of rich "people food" into a pet's diet on Thanksgiving is bad for their tummies! In fact, some typical holiday fare such as turkey bones or turkey skin should never be fed to pets. Animals can choke on bone splinters and have trouble digesting fatty parts of the turkey such as the skin with all its soaked-in salt and grease. If you must treat a pet to your food, try offering a small taste of cooked, unseasoned veggies like carrots or green beans or a bit of white meat turkey. Because dessert is my favorite meal of the day, I treat North to an apple slice or small spoonful of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) as his special dessert.

I am soooo guilty of giving Missy table scraps. I always pick out bones, but I never even thought of turkey skin. Missy's gonna be mad this year when she doesn't get what she's used to!

That's strange... We've had several dogs over the past few decades and we've always fed them bones and skin AND meat, though we cut the meat and skin up into bite-sized pieces first. None of our dogs have ever had a problem with digestion. Of course we never feed them FISH bones...

Dogs can't really taste much anyway, they rely on their sense of smell to tell them something is tasty. So feeding them bland, unseasoned stuff is all the same to them. My dogs LOVE cooked carrots.

We never intentionally give my dog people food. Though she loves to stand near the trash can so she can catch a few apple skins when my dad is peeling apples for his famous apple pie that he makes during the holiday season.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to giving dogs people food. One school believes that dogs should only eat dog food, and the other believes that it's ok for dogs to have "people food". Back in the day, dogs didn't even get "dog food". They just ate scraps and such all the time. I've raised my dogs eating both dog and people food all their life, so they do just fine with it.

Our dog the the family garbage disposal. She gets more scraps than regular dog food. Guess that's why she doesn't like eating the dog food much. Lol. We don't give her fish bones tho. Just yesterday my sister used the left over olive oil, bread crumbs and egg and made a lil treat for Eclipse.

The only people food my dogs get is peanut butter put on their heartworm meds, a few Cheerios as treats and a very little bit of shredded cheese when I'm making pizza. When they hear the timer go off (for any reason) they assume I'm making pizza and it's time for cheese.

Also, please do not give your dog or cat anything with onions, garlic, leeks, and chives in it this Thanksgiving. Save yourself the heartache.

These foods are toxic for dogs and cats. I didn't know before my cat got injured after enjoying a few fresh chives, the chives caused her red blood cells to burst and she started to bleed out from a simple bump and bruise. She recovered and I learned my lesson.

Everyone in my family who has pets now completely avoids feeding their four legged family members any of these foods.

If you don't believe me the info is all available at the ASPCA's website http://www.aspca.org/site/DocServer/vetm0805_562-566.pdf
