Although titled Groundhog Day, the film starring Bill Murray didn't really tell us much about the mysterious rodent. Originally a German holiday, the first American reference to Groundhog's Day was in 1841 via a diary entry noting the big job the little guy has of determining whether we will soon be basking in the budding spring, or bundling up for another six weeks of winter.
